The Art Room is getting ready for another great year!  We will spend the beginning of the year doing some community building projects including Maynard Tigers and a Green Meadow community mural.  As the year moves on we will be focusing on studying the Masters including Picasso, Van Gogh, Mattisse, Monet and more.  We will work in a variety of mediums including 2D and 3D work.  The Second Grade will have their annual art show in the spring.  The exact date and location have not yet been determined but we hope to have that information soon.

How you can help.  If you'd like to help in the art room this year, please email me directly.  The following list of supplies would be helpful.

The Art Room needs your help!

The clock is ticking down to the Second Grade Art Show.  The Art Room needs volunteers to help transport work, make signs, hang the show and take the show down.

Winter Update

Happy 2015!  Here are some samples of the work we've created recently including Grade 1 pattern owls.  They've taken up residence in the front display case so please stop and take a look when you visit the school.  They have such individual personalities- I just LOVE them.  Also, please keep an eye out for this week's School Newsletter.  There is important information about our move to the online art museum ARTSONIA.COM where I will upload student work for families to view, share and order items with artwork on it.  If you'd like to get an idea of what it's about, scroll down to Grade 3 and see directions on how to see their work.  Also, a HUGE Thank You to Lydia Clancy who has been volunteering in the art room on Thursdays and has helped me organize, clean, label work and put up the beautiful displays in the school.  I could never get all this done with out her! Thank you Lydia!!!

Donations:  Clean Egg Cartons, old marbles or glass beads, buttons, CDs, clorox wipes, paper towels, hand wipes, old hardware parts (no nails please), cardboard from boxes (at least 9X11 size)

Grade K: Heather Galler Folk Art Landscapes.  Students drew their hills, divided their hills into sections, added patterns, drew a house, tree, and the moon or sun.  Students outlined their work in Sharpie, colored their patterns with crayon and painted with watercolor.

Grade 1: Pattern Owls based on the book "The Little White Owl". Students read "The little White Owl" then drew their owls, added patterns in Oil Pastel and painted with watercolors.  Students then cut out their owls and added a branch for them to perch on.

Grade 2: Snowmen At Night in Chalk.  Students studied light and shadow and blending chalk after reading the book "Snowmen at Night".   We discussed light and shadow and students drew their snowmen focusing on the light and shade then dded details to their drawings.

Grade 3: Birds with Birdhouses.  Students drew and painted birdhouses then created birds using craft and painted paper and glued them on to their birdhouses.  To view examples visit Artsonia.com, click on "schools" just under ART MUSEUM.  Select Massachusetts, then Maynard MA and Green Meadow will appear.

October goodies...Spooky Trees, Nighttime pumpkins & Mama Spiders

We've been very busy in the art room!  October was filled with all things fall and spooky!  In first grade, we made Nighttime Pumpkins.    In second grade, we worked to finish our Louise Josephine Bourgeois "Mama" spiders and in a few third grade classes, we created blown paint Spooky Trees.  Below are photos and descriptions of the projects.  Enjoy!


Night time Pumpkins in 1st Grade.  1st Graders learned how to draw Pumpkins in black oil pastels using a "segmenting method" building from a center oval and drawing curved lines down on each side to create segments.  They then added stems and drew two leaves on their paper.  Students learned how to use Primary colors (yellow, red, blue) to make Secondary Colors (Orange and Green).
They painted their pumpkins and leaves yellow then added Red to their pumpkins to make Orange mixing their paint directly on the paper.  After cleaning their brushes, students added blue to their leaves to make green.  When their paintings were dry, students cut out their pumpkins and leaves and glued them down to black paper.  Using white, brown and green chalk, they added highlights, stems, vines, a moon and stars.  Some students added extra details like a fence or even a rocket ship! Aren't these just gorgeous?

Second Grade Mama Spiders:  Students used Sculpture Wire, tissue paper, Mod Podge, newspaper, googlie eyes and pipe cleaners to create these whimsical spiders.

Students learned about Louise Josephine Bourgeois- a  French/American sculptor who's Bronze Spider sculptures were 30 feet high and 33 feet wide!  Ms. Bourgeois made these sculptures as an ode to her mother who passed away when she was 21 years old.  Ms. Bourgeois felt her mother was like a spider because she was a weaver, protector, and very cleaver (like a spider).    My room is currently over run with more than 100 spiders but it's quite exciting! Every child who enters my room comments on them.   Here are a few examples of the Second Grader Spiders.   I will post more photos as I begin displaying them.  Some will come home and some will be kept for display at the end of year art show.

Third Grade Spooky Trees:  Students in 3rd Grade learned how to create a water color wash using yellow and red water colors to create a fall sunset background.  After their backgrounds were dry, students used watered down tempera paint and straws to blow spooky trees.  Some students added trees higher up on the paper to give the feeling of depth to their compositions.  Additional details such as bats, spiders, witches, ghosts, etc. were added using a black Sharpie Makers.  I love the way the students solved problems (trees to short, trunks too thick) and their imaginations to create these fun works of art.  I hope you enjoy them as much as I do!

Welcome to the Art Room at Green Meadow.

The year has gotten off to a great start and students in all grades have been busy making their Watercolor Resist Maynard Tigers.  The tigers are hanging throughout the school, so please look for them the next time you visit the school.  Below are some samples of the great work being produced so far this year.

Want to help out in the art room?  I still have room for a few parent volunteers to help with hanging/displaying work, prepping lessons, assisting in classes, organizing the art show, and creating Artsonia.com account. (see this month's Green Meadow newsletter for more information about Artsonia)  If you are interested in volunteering, please email me and let me know when you are available, best way to reach you, what you are interested in helping with.

Thank you to those who have contributed supplies, paper towel rolls, plates, bags etc so far this year.  My room is filling up quickly!  Items still needed are:
