Exploring Russian Art and Archetecture

Last month students explored Russian Art and Architecture.  Grades Kindergarten and First learned about Wassily Kandinsky and his rare condition of  synesthesia which caused him to see color when he heard music and to hear music when he painted!  Students created art based upon his "1913 painting "Color Study: Squares with Concentric Circles(below) which we compared to writing a song!

Grade K: Concentric Circles using Primary colors

Grade: 1 Collaged Concentric circles using Primary and Complementary colors.

Second Grade learned about Russian Matryoska Nesting Dolls.  After drawing 3 different sized dolls students used pattern and color to decorate their dolls.  The dolls were glued down to either a warm or cool colored back ground painted with cake tempura paint.

Grade 3 students studied Russian Architecture and the Onion Domes of St. Basil's Cathedral.  Using line and pattern, students created their own Russian City Scene over a background of blended chalk in either warm or cool colors.

The next country we will visit will be Mexico where students will make Tortugas, Huipils, Sombreros, and Sugar Skulls.  Have a wonderful break and a Happy New Year.

We're off to a great start!

We are off to a great start in the Art Room.  We have created Summertime Selfies, Oil Pastel Tie Dye squares and Maynard Tigers.  This week we are beginning a unit on Russian Art studying Matryoshka nesting dolls, Vassily Kandinsky and the architecture of St. Basil's Church.  I will post some photos when we complete our unit in a few weeks.

If you have not signed up for Artsonia, please consider doing so.  Feel free to email me at sarcelay@maynard.k12.ma.us  I will add your email address to your child's account and you will receive a verification email.  Once you have verified the account your child's artwork will be available to view.  This online art museum is a great place to store all your students work!

Looking forward to an amazing year! Happy creating!
